About Mauritius

Mauritius is known worldwide for its white sandy beaches, its crystal clear blue lagoons and its coral reefs. Strategically situated between Asia, Africa and Australia, it is only a thirty minutes flight from Reunion Island. From the shores to the centre of the island, the luxurious vegetation offers a contrast of colours and different landscapes. The population is a blend of diverse cultures and religions: 1,260,000 inhabitants comprising of Hindus, Creoles, Chinese and Europeans living together in peaceful harmony. This mix of cultures has led to a lifestyle unique to Mauritius.

Mauritius became independent in 1968 and is a member of the Commonwealth. Because of its political stability and economic developments, Mauritius is a safe and reliable place to invest. English is the official language but French is widely spoken by all. The currency used is the Mauritian rupee. There are various international Banks all over the Island. The capital, Port Louis is a major business centre.

Road infrastructure

A good highway system provides easy and safe access to all parts of the island. In Mauritius driving is on the left hand side. There are numerous bus lines, taxis and mini buses are available upon request.

Life in the North

The North, with its beautiful beaches and sunny climate, is the most appreciated tourist destination. Well-developed infrastructures make it a safe and secure place for a good family life and opportunities to engage in numerous activities such as cruises around the northern islands, water sports, horse riding clubs, gym facilities, well-equipped fitness centres and so on...

Grand Baie is the most famous seaside resort in Mauritius. It is a shopping paradise with all the leading international brands as well as Mauritian designer boutiques. In the north, many restaurants offer a large variety of the Mauritian cuisine, a combination of Indian, Creole, Chinese and European flavours. In the evening bars and night clubs are friendly places to relax.

Golf

In Mauritius, golfers can practise their favourite sport under the best of conditions on well-kept beautiful and spectacular golf courses overlooking the sea. Several of the golf courses have been designed by world leading golfers such as Bernhard Langer, Ernie Els or Rodney Wright.
